How to Erase the Memory of a Laptop Battery

A CMOS password is a password that must be entered when you first boot your laptop, even before your operating system boots. One of its main uses is for heightened security. If you have forgotten this password, the only way to remove it is to erase your laptop's internal battery. 1. Open the laptop using your screwdriver. Consult the owner's manual, service manual or the maker of your laptop for instructions on opening your particular brand of laptop as each one has different procedures.

2. Locate the motherboard. This will be the largest component in your laptop and will be a large green board.

3. Locate the CR2032 laptop battery on the front of the motherboard. The battery will be small, silver and round. It can usually be located near the edges of your motherboard.

4. Remove any clips holding the HP HSTNN-OB62 battery in place. Carefully grab the battery and pull it free from its holder.

5. Place the HP laptop battery off to the side for 20 to 30 minutes. This is the time it takes for the battery to lose its charge, and any information saved on it will be erased.

6. Replace the replacement laptop battery, and put your laptop back together.
